Our oldest program is evolving - how and why?
The face of Hope for Children’s oldest program – Child, Youth and Community Enrichment (CYC) – is evolving. Born over a decade ago from the need to provide severely impoverished HIV affected families in the Gulele area of Addis Ababa with support, the program now supports 400 families with monthly food payments to encourage children to attend school. As well as cash payments for food, children have access to an after school youth centre, health screening and psychosocial services.

Walking in New Shoes: How Ethiopian returnee women are avoiding unsafe migration
On the fourth floor of a dilapidated building in a compound set back from a busy Addis Ababa road, the sound of whirring from a sewing machine vibrates between the wooden partition walls of a small workshop. Here, Arsema (*not her real name) hunches over the sewing machine carefully feeding strips of navy suede under the needle. She is making a pair of sandals, which she will soon add to the growing collection hanging from the rack on the wall.

Summer School in Full Swing
It’s Monday morning at 9am, and around 60 children are lining up excitedly outside the HFC office. There is a long line of both boys and girls snaking along the length of the building, punctuated by many sets of beady eyes and eager smiles. These students are roughly half of our 100 summer school participants who are enrolled in the school holiday program to improve their academic and social development during the two month summer break.

Aussie MPs visit HFC
On a sunny Wednesday afternoon in Addis, Hope for Children had two surprise visitors. No ordinary visitors, these two guests were Wayne Swan (former Deputy PM of Australia) and Tanya Plibersek (current Deputy Leader of the Opposition).

Summer Art Workshop
On Wednesday 1 July, two artists from Argentinian NGO Little Big Worlds travelled to Addis Ababa, to host a free art workshop to the children in our Youth Centre.

Giving back in Gulele
It’s 9am on a chilly Friday, and ten women are squashed into a small room at our office, rifling through bags of items that they each have perched on their laps. The bags contain bandages, antiseptic, gauze, paracetamol, soap, antibiotics, gloves and emergency drugs. These are Home Based Care Kits, and the women are volunteer carers, who walk each day on foot to care for 30 critically ill beneficiaries in the local area of Gulele.

HFC has a new home in Addis!
The HFC country team have just moved into a beautiful new office, just down the road from our old compound. The office is located in an area called Shiromeda, in the foothills of the city. This area is where the majority of our beneficiaries live, so we are located well within the community we support.

In early August, a number of HFC staff visited the “Siklit” (Success) Self Help Group. These groups are one of our core livelihood intervention strategies for women in Addis Ketema who are at risk of migration. The approach is based on the principle of collective savings and loans with the objective of economic, social and political empowerment.
